Abstract

Background & Rationale: Menopause may have a considerable impact on women’s QOL.
Amidst the confusion surrounding the use of menopausal hormone therapy for
menopause-related symptoms , CAM therapies (specifically Homeopathy) have gained
popularity.
Objectives: Evaluate effectiveness of homeopathic remedies in the management of
distressing menopausal symptoms affecting the QOL.
Material & Methods: The study was a prospective, interventional, Single-group analytical
trial. Perimenopausal & postmenopausal participants were enrolled from the Family
Medicine out-patient clinics, Cairo University Hospitals. The menopause rating scale was
used for rating symptoms before & after intervention, evaluating each symptom
preliminary at entry, at every visit & at completion.
Primary outcome Results: Results show substantial health improvement upon using
Homeopathic treatment. Hot flushes, depressive mood, physical & mental exhaustion,
joint & muscular discomfort & irritability were the five most frequent complaints in the
study sample. Hot flushes & night sweats have significantly highly improved (92.5%
improvement), exhaustion (62%). Whilst joint & muscular discomfort has shown
(49.23%) improvement. The mean change of the somatic subscore was the highest
(75.79%).
Conclusion: Homeopathy has been found to significantly improve subjective measures of
menopause-related symptoms in frequency & severity decreasing the climacteric distress
among perimenopausal & postmenopausal females in this single- group comparative
analytical study.
