Abstract

In the field of nuclear and radiation physics, there are many
; of radiation detectors. One of these types is the Solid State
ear Track Detector (SSNTD) which rapidly found applications in
:al fields of research such as nuclear science and technology,
physics and geophysics.
In 1959, Silk and Barnes observed trails of damage (latent
s) resulting from the transfer of charged particle energy to the
s of the solid medium through which the charged particles
1. Also Price and Walker (l962a, b) discovered such fission
s in natural samples of mica.
They showed that these tracks are due to the spontaneous
In of 238U. This means that these natural tracks can mainly be
ded as the products of the decay by spontaneous fission of 238U
s localized within the minerals themselves. These tracks can be
ted by conventional optical microscope because of a suitable
ical reagent which can etch the latent tracks.
In 1963 Price and Walker developed a new method for dating
igical materials. This method depends mainly on the fission
ients from the spontaneous break-up of the 238U atoms which
