Abstract
The present thesis introduce an experimental study to improve the billet quality of aluminum alloy 6063 during casting. The effect of cast quality in the product is very important in order to insure an extrusion process. This due to fact that the final product depends mainly on the quality of the billet without any defects. The quality is born during casting process through solidification of metal inside the hot top casting machine. To reach such quality , there are many casting factors such as mold quality, casting machine , molten metal , and casting parameters.
The casting parameters for a certain machine with a fixed mold are the most important factors defining the billet quality. These casting parameters are pouring temperature, quantity of cooling water, cast speed and the billet diameter. The aim of this work is to deeply investigate such parameters and the other factors will kept constant. All these previous casting parameters are studied on the casting machine in the cast house at EGYPTALUM company.
It was found that the sump depth is a parameter produced from all above parameters and represents the solidification rate of billet and also indicate the billet quality.
