Abstract

The present work was planned to study some biochemical alterations in the blood of rats under theeffect of age and starvation. seventy seven male rats were selected and kept
under good hygienic measurements. The-samples of blood were collected from each animal under the effect of age at 1.5,2.0 and 2.5 months , as weel as und.er the effet of starvation after, 24, 48, 72 and 96 hours starvation, respectively. The samples of collected blood and serum were subjected to biochemical analysis for the following parameters: l} GlUCQse-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (erythrocytes) 2) Reduced glutathione (erythrocytes) 3) Superoxide dismutase (Blood). 4) ¥-glutamyl transferase (serum) 5) Blood picture red blood cell count, packed cell volume haemoglobin and blood indices. The results obtain~ could be sum.arized as follows: I ) The erythrocytic glucose -6-phosphate dehydrogenase showed a a i qn i f i.can t. decrease in the mean values with advanced age and the effect of star- rats showed a non-significant decrease with increasing age. While the effect of starvation on ’(-glutamyl transferase activity showed a significant increase after 48, 72 and 96 hours starvation 5) The effect of age on blood picture in rats revealed normocytic normochronic anaemia, and the obtained data showed a significant-decrease in
packed cell volume for 1.5,2.0 and 2.5 and haemoglobin concentration months while. the effect of starvation on blood picture revealed normocytic normochronic anaemia after 24, 48 and 72 hours starvation and after 96 hour starvation microcytic normochromic anaemia was developed. The
data showed a significant decrease in the haemoglobin
concentration and Red blood cells count after ,72 and 96 hours starvation, and in case of M.e.V. after 96 hours showed significant decrease The packed cell volume showed highly significant decrease after 72 and 96 hours starvation.
