Abstract

23154 slaughtered animals 13254 cattle, 5944 buffaloes and
3956 buffalo veals at Ismailia abattoirs were inspected for the
incidence and predilection seats of Cvsticercus bovts. Carcasses
were subjected to routine and detailed postmortum - inspection
during the period from January, 1989 to December. 1990. Data collected from the abattoirs revealed that, the incidence of CysL~cercus bovts among male cattle under 3 years, male cattle over 3 years, cows, besides male buffaloes, female
buffaloes and calves were &63%, 0%, 3.19%, 0,034%, 0.96%, 0%
during 1989 respectively while during (1990) such incidences were,
&95’7., 0%, 1.25%, 0.038%, 0.51% and 0%, repectively. During
detailed inspection, the incidence precentages of Cysttcerc’is houLs among male cattle under 3 years, male cattle over 3 years, cows, male buffaloes, female buffaloes and buffalo veals were, 11.32%, 0%, 6.65%, 0.51%, 37% and 0% during (1989) while such percentages during (1990) were 11.1%, 0%, 8.33%, 1-12%, 1,11% and 0%, respectively. Predilection seats and frequency of Cyst~cercvs bovzs were in the following order heart, masseter muscle, diaphragm, fore
quarter, hind quarter, liver and tongue. The effect of animal
species, age, sex and variation in the climatic condition on the
incidence of Cysttcercus bovis were discussed in detail. Buffaloes were less frequently infested than cattle. No cyst icerci were detected in buffaloe veal during routine and
detailed inspection of buffaloe veal. The highest incidence with
Cysttcercus bovts was found in male cattle at 1.5—2 years old. The
incidence was high in spring and early summer, decreased by winter
and autumn. Histopathological studies of Cysttcerctts bovis in cardiac and
skeletal muscle revealed that there is high degree of inter
fibriller ieucocyti.c infiltration with lymphocytes and
macrophages.. in addition to atrophy and hyalnization due to the
presence of the cyst pressure. The releation of the Cysttcercus
bovis to the public health was discussed. A proposed programme for
eradication and control of Cvst~cercvs bov~s was discussed.
