Abstract

One of the most important parts of the animal body is the oral cavity. Particularly the teeth as it is the first part of the digestive system.
The present investigation aimed to throw light on the surgical affections of the oral cavity of the different animals and trials for their treatment. In the present study 419 cases out of 2500 examined animals were recorded to be suffered from different varietes of congenital and acquired teeth affections along with soft tissue affections.
These cases were subjected to a full study including history of the case, clinical examination, laboratory diagnosis including biochemical, histopathological examination and also radiographic examination when seen indicated.
In the present study 76 cases were recorded to be suffered from congenital affections of teeth with an incidence of 22.3% from the teeth affection, they include rotation of teeth 27 cases (35.5%), diastosis dentium 24 cases (31.5%), polydontia 3 cases (4.1%), brachgnathism 12 cases (15.8%) prognathism 6 cases (7.9%) and oligodontia 4 cases (5.2%) from all congenital dental affections respectively. Moreover, the acquired dental affections were recorded in 265 cases with incidence of 77.7% of total dental affections which include sharp enemal points 70 cases (26.4%), wave formed mouth 13 cases (4.9%), hocking teeth 27 cases (10%), elongation of cheek teeth 13 cases (4.9%), dental fracture 63 cases (23.8%), dental carries 24 cases (9.1 %), dental tarter 38 cases (14.4%) perdentitis 15 cases (5.7%) and dental fistule 2 cases (0.8%) from the acquired dental affections respectively.
The present study also recorded that 78 cases suffered from different affections of oral soft tissues such as gingivitis 38 cases (48.8%), epulis 2 cases (3.8%), wound of lip 14 cases (18%), wound and laceration of tongue 9 cases (11.4%), penetrating foreign body into tongue 1 case (1.3%), tip necrosis 1 case (1.3%) and galactophagia 12 cases (15.4%) from affections of the soft tissues respectively.
All these conditions were corrected by routine surgical procedures.
The dental disorders mostly occur in equines more than any other species while ruminants were mostly affected with soft tissue affections. Among congenital dental affections prognathism and brackygnathism specially exaggerated form is serious affections affecting health condition of animal and required frequent cutting and rasping while rotation, diastasis dentium, oligodentia and polydontia of little significance require periodical cleaning of the oral cavity to remove accumulated food.
Most of acquired affections are serious on the animal health and usually associated with difficulties in mastication and inappetance and consequently general bad condition of the animal such as sharp enamel points waveformed mouth, elongation of cheek teeth. Dental caries, severe form of dental tarter, peridontitis, dental fistule and fracture associated with exposure of pulp cavity. While, transverse enamel fissure & enamel cleavage of low significance.
All surgical affections of the soft tissue of oral cavity are serious and required immediate surgical interference. Nowadays galactophagia as one of the most common problem in dairy farms which associated with economic loss and danger on health of the animals required immediate surgical interference for control Of this highly spread bad habit.
