Abstract

The susceptibility of eighty isolates of Pseudomonas aeruginosa to 18 different antibiotics was carried out by determination of MIC. Amoxycillin and azithromycin were the least effective antibiotics tested, as all isolates were resistant to them. All isolates were susceptible to amikacin and meropenem while the isolates showed resistance rates to the remaining tested antibiotics ranging -#102;-#114;-#111;-#109; 3% (for cefotaxime, cefipime and polymyxin B) to 99% (for cefuroxime). The susceptibility of the 80 tested Pseudomonas aeruginosa isolates to benzalkonium chloride, cetrimide, chlorocresol, phenylmercuric nitrate, and thiomersal, was also determined. Phenylmercuric nitrate and thiomersal were the most effective biocides tested, as all isolates were sensitive to them. Benzalkonium chloride, cetrimide and chlorocresol showed resistance rates of 69%, 36% and 88%, respectively.
