Abstract

The present study deals with the sedimentology and petrophysical properties of the Miocene rocks that crop out at the eastern tip of the Qattara Depression, North-Western Desert, Egypt. The area is situated between latitudes 30o 22.782’ N and 30o 30’ N and longitudes 28o 33.100’ E and 29o 30’ E; aiming to evaluate their origin and reservoir characteristics. These rocks include two principal lithostratigraphic units: the Moghra Formation (Lower Miocene) at the bottom and the Marmarica Formation (Upper Miocene) at the top.It is also concerned with evaluating the effect of various diagenetic processes on the petrophysical characteristics of the sediments.Eighty-seven samples were collected from the area of study for both sedimentological and petrophysical investigations. Several techniques were applied including: insoluble residue determination, X-ray diffraction analysis, granulometric analysis, thin sections description and modal analysis aided by the staining technique, scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray fluorescence analysis. The petrophysical analyses include: storage capacity properties (porosity, permeability and density) and electrical resistivity properties in three successive runs of different brine concentration and mounce potential.
