Abstract

This study was conducted on 90 elderly male and female persons aged between 60 -75 years. Selected from the outpatient clinic of internal medicine and care units departments of Ain Shams University hospitals from July2010 to December 2010.
All were selected from Cairo dwellers. They were divided into three groups:
nursing homes.
ambulatory elderly persons. All participants were subjected to:
Full medical history and clinical examination Complete blood picture, Serum calcium and phosphorus, Serum alkaline phosphatise, Serum 25 hydroxy vitamin D (by Elisa), Liver function tests (serum ALT and AST), Kidney function test (serum creatinine), Abdominal US. Aim of the work: To assess the vitamin D status in elderly homebound,
nursing home residents and ambulatory elderly persons. The results of the study showed the following:
There was statistically significance difference between all groups in relation to nutrition .We can see that group III of community dwelling ambulatory elderly persons show increase in nutrition of vitamin D rich food more than group II and group I.
103 There was statistically significance difference between all groups in relation sun exposure. We can see that group III show increase in exposure to sun light followed by group I (homebound elderly cases) and group II (elderly persons living in nursing homes) is considered the lowest in sun light.
There was no statistically significance difference between all groups in relation to age, gender and veiling or not also weight (Kg) and BMI, However there was significance results in the waist circumference in group II other than group I and group III.
There was no statistically significance difference among all groups in relation to labs investigations, Phosphorous, Total leucocytic count, Serum Createnine, SGOT and SGPT.
There was no statistically significance difference correlation coefficient between vitamin D, age and labs in group I except in Total Leucocytic Count it was statistically significance difference Also in our study there was no statistically significance difference correlation coefficient between vitamin D, age and labs in group II.
There was no statistically significance difference correlation coefficient between vitamin D, age and labs in group III except in SGOT according to P value (P>0.05). from the result of presented study, it could be concluded that:
1. from this study, we conclude that geriatric peoples in Egypt aged 60-75 years old suffer from vitamin D deficiency.
2. Vitamin D deficiency is more in Geriatric persons in nursing houses in comparison to home bound or community ambulatory elderly persons.
3. Lack of enough exposure to sun light and decrease intake of vitamin D in elderly persons causes vitamin D deficiency.
