Abstract The effect of verapamil and nifedipine on plasma glucose and insulin levels have been determined in rats. The rats were divided into 3 groups, two groups were employed for drug medication, while the third one served as control. The drugs are given in a dose of lmg/kg for verapamil, and 0.1mg/kg for nifedipine, these doses were far below L.D.50 for each drug. The statistical analysis of the data obtained showed that : 1 - No changes in the level of fasting plasma insulin in verapamil treated rats comparable with control group. 2 - There was a highly significant decrease in the plasma insulin level in verapamil treated rats. 3 - There was a highly significant increase in plasma insulin level in nifedipine treated rats. 4 - No significant change in the level of fasting plasma glucose in verapamil treated rats compar-able with control group. 5 - There was a highly significant increase in plasma glucose level in verapamil treated rats. 6 - There was a highly significant increase in plasma level in nifedipine treated rats. It can be concluded, that the effect of verapamil and nifedipine on glucose tolerance and insulin secretion should be taken into consideration in diabetic patients. |
