Abstract

The present study aims at investigating the effectiveness of using a
student -centered program in developing preparatory school students’ achievement in English, language proficiency, creative thinking and the verbal interaction pattern in their classrooms.The study used the quasi-experimental research design .Subjects of the study consisted of sixty preparatory stage students . They were randomly assigned to the experimental group and control group. The experimental group received instruction using the student -centered program ( SCP) , while the control group received no such instruction .Tools of he study included a training program using SCP, Achievement Test in English, adaptation of the Language Proficiency Test, adaptation of Creative Thinking Measure , a form of Flanders’s & Moskowitz’s and Spada and Frohlich’s Verbal Interaction Analysis systems. After the experiment was conducted, ”t” test was used for analyzing the data obtained from the application of the tools of the study .Scores obtained by the experimental and control group were compared. Results of the comparisons revealed a significant degree of improvement in the experimental group’s Achievement Test in English, Language Proficiency Test, Creative Thinking Measure and the verbal interaction in their classrooms. Discussion of these fmdings, recommendations, and suggestions for further studies are presented.
