Abstract

Cognition is the process of awareness or thought. Cognitive disorder is a
term used for any mental disorder that directly affects cognition. It is most
often used in relation to amnesia. Drugs used in the treatment of Alzheimer
aimed mainly at improving cognitive functions of the patient. Recent studies
revealed that some of these drugs have the ability to improve cognition
functions in some healthy adult species. Like memantine, donepezil and
selegiline. However the above three mentioned drugs were reported to
produce disturbance in motor co-ordination.
The aim of the present work is to assess and compare between the
effect of selegiline, memantine and donepezil alone and in combination on
the cognition functions and motor co- ordination of adult normal rats.
Avoidance and escape learning was assessed by using The LE916
shuttle box (or avoidance and escape cage). The effects of drug
administration on motor coordination of rats detected by using ROTARODS
LE 8200.
Conclusion: donepezil alone was superior to memantine and
selegiline in improving cognition functions but memantine effect in motor
co ordination was better than donepezil effect. In combination groups
memantine, donepezil combination was superior to other combination
groups in improving cognition functions and also superior to the donepezil
alone or memantine alone in improving cognition functions. Memantine,
donepezil combination has the least worse effect on motor coordination in
comparison to other combination groups.
