Abstract

Foot and mouth disease is severe, highly contagious disease of cloven-hoofed animals that affects large animal livestock species and molecular characterization of FM DV is essential for effective control strategies of the disease.
During this study 1042 samples were collected from 423 clinically diseased, cross bred cattle of different ages (from two months to five years old) in Behira and Sharkia governorates;(136) samples were collected from cattle in Abo- hommos, Dalangat and [Ztai-Elbaroud during June, 2011 and (906) samples were collected from cattle during March, 2012 in Behira (Abo- hommos, Dalangat, Damanhour and Etai-Elbaroud) and Sharkia govemorates.
Clinical examination of the cattle subjected to the study revealed that ti. lesions, foot lesions, teat lesions and sudden death are the prevalent clinical signs.
Viral isolation was performed on BI-IK-21 cell line and revealed that 23.5% from samples, collected during, 2011 are positive while positive result from samples, collected during, 2012 is 37.3%.
FMDV type A and 0 were identified during 2011 while type A, 0 and SAl’2 vere identified during 2012.
Phylogenetic analysis revealed that type A belongs to Asia topotype and Iran 05 lineage, type 0 belongs to ME-SA topotype and PanAsia-2 lineage while type SAT2 belongs to topotype VII and lineage Ghb-12. So these strains should be included in vaccine preparation.
