Abstract Carbamazepine and sodium valproate are anticonvulsant drugs used for management of epilepsy. This study was done to evaluate and compare the short-term chronic toxicity of these two drugs in adult albino rats by studying their effects on the liver and kidney histopathologically and biochemically, as well as their effects on the . chromosomal pattern. This study was conducted on 180 adult albino rats weighing approx imately 130-150gm each. They were classified into three groups, . first group was used as a control, second group was used for .carbamazepine and the third group’” was used for sodium valproate. This .study was done throughout three periods (two weeks, four weeks and after stopping of drugs) to evaluate short-term chronic The hepatic biochemical changes of both drugs revealed very increase in bilirubin, AST, AL T, and ALP (P< :’.0005) compared to the control. These results were confirmed by the ?&tstopathological changes which were mild cellular infiltration with lymphocytes, fatty changes, dilatation and congestion ”Of central vein after 2 w.s administration of carbamazepine. These ~~ions increased after 4 +ks with bile duct narrowing, dilat~tion and .wngestion of portal vein |
