Abstract

Renal transplantation is the treatment of choice in children with end-stage renal disease (ESRD). The indication for kidney transplantation is end-stage renal disease (ESRD), regardless of the primary cause.
from July 2010 to January 2013, 50 consecutive pediatric kidney transplants were studied in the Department of Pediatric Urology, Abo El Resh Hospital, Faculty of medicine, Cairo University. These patients population comprised of 36 boys and 14 girls.
The screening of candidates for renal transplantation included a thorough medical history, physical and psychiatric examination, and immunological evaluation. The pre-transplant evaluation evaluated the potential contraindications and risk factors for transplantation (e.g. malignancy, ongoing infection).
The procedures were started simultaneously in two adjacent operating rooms—one team works on the nephrectomy, while the other team prepares the recipient area for grafting.
The surgical goals were to minimize ischemia time, preserve renal vessels and preserve ureteral blood supply.
Recipient mean age was 9.9 years with a range of 3 -17 years. The highest percentages were males (72 %). The most common etiology of end-stage renal disease (ESRD) was Obstructive uropathy representing 34% of cases.
