Abstract

UP is a significant problem in ESRD patients. Until few years ago, its treatment was largely empirical and ineffective. Despite recent advances, about 40% of ESRD patients still experience very annoying, potentially disabling itching. This symptom significantly affects their QOL, particularly sleep quality, mood and ultimately self-esteem.
Newer insights into the underlying pathogenesis of pruritus have enabled novel treatment approaches that target the pruritus specific pathophysiological mechanism.
The current study aimed to evaluate the frequency of pruritus in 50 patients under treatment with hemodialysis, and its relationship with (age, sex, xerosis, neuropathy, duration of dialysis, history of atopy and some laboratory findings including hematocrit, creatinine, urea, calcium, phosphorus, alkaline phosphatase and PTH).
No significant relation between pruritus and clinical or laboratory data which was studied in our research group with exception of neuropathy and sex (in favor of females), which were the only significant finding in our study group.
These findings justify the need for further researches on nerve function and neurotransmitters in hemodialysis patients.
Furthermore, therapeutic or preventive modalities targeting neuropathy which may be effective in controlling the itch in hemodialysis patients.
