Abstract

0 Environmental stress especially drought has many harmful effects on plant life therefore this work aimed to investigate and mitigate the harmful effects of water stress on the plant growth and yield. Broad bean and soy bean cultivated under three levels of soil field capacity; 80, 60 & 40 % FC and plant treated with proline or salicylic acid at vegetative and flowering stages while the rice straw mulched before cultivation. The growth and yield of broad bean and soy bean reduced significantly on both soil types where plant height reduced to 88.16, 73.27 % & 64.13, 62.87 %, plant dry weight reduced to 84.62, 80.98 % & 53.82, 45.05 %, pod dry weight reduced to 74.66, 64.49 % & 46.33, 51 % and seed weight per plant reduced to 79.41, 61.16 % & 50.45, 54.35 % as FC reduced from 80 % to 60 and 40 % respectively. As well as water stress significantly reduced the leaf nitrogen to 82.44 & 86.33 % and 54.47 & 69.01 %, potassium to 63.68 & 74.46 % and 48.47 & 47.03 %, calcium to 69.58 & 67.92 % and 46.07 & 48.9 %, chlorophyll to 24.21 & 27.97 and 40.31 & 37.16 %, carbohydrates to 90.79 & 76.97 % and 77.83 & 69.43 % and protein to 80.86 & 86.85 % and 54.17 & 69.34 % for broad bean and soy bean at 60 and 40 % respectively.
