Abstract
This study was conducted at Ain Shams University Maternity Hospital to assess free serum testosterone in pregnant women with preeclampsia in the third trimester to find out possible relation between the level of free serum testosterone and occurrence of preeclampsia.
Sixty pregnant women were included in our study and classified into two groups:
- Study group: in which 30 pregnant women (singleton,
0 – 3 parity).
- Control group: in which 30 pregnant women (singleton,
0 – 3 parity) in healthy uncomplicated pregnancies.
During the study, there was no statistical difference between patients with preeclampsia and healthy uncomplicated pregnancies regarding the maternal age, gestational age, body mass index while there is high significant differences between both groups regarding the systolic blood pressure and diastolic blood pressure and free serum testosterone.
So, increase serum free testosterone concentration may be considered an important risk factor in pathogenesis of preeclampsia and stimulates research in the potential role of antiandrogens in the management of preeclampsia.
More studies are needed to confirm the results in current study as the sample size was only 60 cases and some qualitative tests are used and also the results of previous studies concerning the role of androgens and free serum testosterone in the pathogenesis of preeclampsia have varied.
Some studies cited the increase in androgen levels as one of the causes of preeclampsia whereas this relationship was not revealed into others.
