Abstract
Perinatal asphyxia is an important cause of admission to neonatal intensive care units (NICU) with multi-organ dysfunction.However, in spite of compensatory mechanisms, it may progress to hypoxic- ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) involving the brain and heart.So, the present study aimed to find out the myocardial involvement in neonates having HIE by the ECG and cardiac enzymes (CK-MB, Total CK, and Total LDH) changes.To achieve target, the present study recruited 20 neonates with HIE. They were subjected to careful history taking, through clinical examination, routine laboratory investigations and cardiac enzymes (CK-MB, Total CK, and Total LDH) assessment. They were also subjected to 12 lead ECG recording.In the current study, grades of HIE ranged from mild HIE in 8 cases (40.0 %) to moderate HIE in another 8 cases (40.0 %) and severe HIE in 4 cases (20.0 %).
