Abstract Although writing is a very important skill that students are required to master at the secondary stage, many EFL students encounter various difficulties when they write in the English language. To have a clear view of these difficulties, the researcher followed certain steps: conducting a pilot study on a sample of 25 EFL secondary school students, analyzing the content of the students’ book, interviewing some EFL senior teachers, and reviewing the literature. As a result, the researcher suggested using the portfolio as a learning tool that might help boost students’ writing. The main purpose of the present study was to investigate the effectiveness of the use of portfolio as a learning tool in developing the writing competence and perceptions of first year secondary school students. Therefore, the researcher adopted the portfolio development model by Barrett (2005b) and applied it to the experimental group to investigate its effectiveness in developing the overall writing competence and its components. |
