Abstract

The purpose of the present study was to investigate the effect of using
Newspaper – Based Instruction on developing some reading
comprehension skills among EFL secondary school students. The design
of the study was quasi – experimental design, (control group/
experimental group). The participants of the study were from 1st year
secondary school students (N=76), divided into two groups: The control
group (N=38) and the experimental group (N=38). The students of the
experimental group were instructed using Newspaper-Based Instruction,
but the students of the control group were instructed by the regular
instruction. The Instrument of the study was EFL reading comprehension
test, prepared by the researcher. Also, the researcher used a rubric in
order to assess the students’ EFL reading comprehension skills. The test
was administered to the control and experimental groups before
introducing Newspaper-Based Instruction to be sure that the two groups
were equivalent. Subsequent to applying Newspaper-Based Instruction to
the experimental group, the test was introduced to both groups again.
Findings of the study showed that EFL reading comprehension skills of
the experimental group students improved due to the effect of
Newspaper-Based Instruction than the students of the control group. This
proved that Newspaper-Based Instruction is effective in developing
reading comprehension skills among EFL secondary school students.
