Abstract

40 male rats were employed for evaluating prophylactic effect of Licorice (300mg/kg b.w. intragastric) in hepatotoxicity due to AFB1 (5mg/kg b.w) and CCl4 (1.8 mg/kg b.w) intraperitoneal. Results revealed that licorice diminished elevated levels of ALT and AST in AFB1 experiment and ALT, AST, ALP, LDH, Ch, Tg3, LDL in CCl4 experiment, while it raised serum Tp, Alb and HDL levels in licorice-CCl4 group than in only CCl4 group. Licorice elevated activity of SOD and GPx enzymes and amount of Pc in liver homogenate when compared with control and CCl4- treated rats. AFB1 showed marked IL-8 reactivity which become mild in pretreatment with licorice. Histopathological examination showed that licorice reduced damage effect which caused by AFB1 and CCl4 and returned liver to its normal architecture. Conclusion: licorice has protective effect against AFB1 and CCl4 hepatotoxicity through reducing lipid peroxidation and oxidative damage respectively.
