Abstract

1. Introduction and literature survey
Family Fagaceae comprises about nine genera and 900- 1000 species which are reported to have a variety of active constituents that have different biological uses. The present work includes phytochemical investigation and evaluation of some biological activities of Q. rabur leaves.
2. Phytochemical screening.
A phytochemical screening of Q. rabur leaves resulted in the presence of flavonoids, tannins, carbohydrates and/or glycosides and triterpenes and/or sterols. Also, it revealed the absence of volatiles, alkaloids, anthraquinones, saponins and
3. Investigation of phenolic constituents of Q. robur leaves
Air dried powder leaves of the Q. rabur (1800 gm) were subjected to exhaustive extraction with 80 % aqueous MeOH under reflux. After drying the extract under reduced pressure, the residue was defatted with chlorofonn (600 C). The 2D-PC analysis proved that chloroform extract is polyphenolic free, while polyphenols are concentrated in methanol soluble portion. Methanol soluble portion was subjected to fractionation on polyamide column using H20/MeOH mixtures with decreasing polarity. Final purification of isolated compounds was achieved using sephadex LH-20 and cellulose columns with convenient solvent systems. Identification of the isolated compounds based on chemical and physical methods including UV, IH/ 13CNMR and MS. These studies led to isolation and identification of ten compounds as follows.
