Abstract The main aim of the present study was to investigate the effectiveness of using the reciprocal questioning (ReQuest) strategy in developing some EFL reading comprehension skills among first year secondary school students. The design of the study was pre-post, experimental-control group. The sample of the study consisted of first year secondary school students at El-Shomout El-Moshtaraka Secondary School (N=60). They were divided into two groups: the experimental group (N=30) and the control group (N=30). The experimental group students were taught using the reciprocal questioning (ReQuest) strategy, while the control group received regular instruction. The tools of the present study included a list of EFL reading comprehension skills required for the sample of the study and an EFL reading comprehension test prepared by the present study researcher. The EFL reading comprehension test was administered to the two groups before applying the strategy to make sure that the two groups are homogeneous. Both groups were at the same level of EFL reading comprehension skills as indicated by the pre-test. After applying the ReQuest strategy to the experimental group, the EFL reading comprehension test was administered again to the two groups. Results of the study revealed that the experimental group achieved more gains in their EFL reading comprehension skills than those of the control group. These results confirmed the effectiveness of ReQuest strategy in developing the EFL reading comprehension skills among EFL first year secondary school students. |
