Abstract Torture is the act of inflicting severe pain (whether physical or psychological) as a means of punishment, revenge, forcing information or a confession, or simply as an act of cruelty. Throughout history, torture has taken on a wide variety of forms, and has often been used as a method of political re-education, interrogation, punishment, and coercion. In addition to state-sponsored torture, individuals or groups may be motivated to inflict torture on others for similar reasons to those of a state; however, the motive for torture can also be for the sadistic gratification of the torturer. The aim of this study is to evaluate the opinion and knowledge of people about torture and its distribution in Egypt , the survey is carried out in Qalubya government among different classes of people including professionals ,employees ,students and workers, most of the studied sample didn’t agree with using torture as a method for obtaining information for the public interest, both physical and psychological methods are the commonest methods of torture used in Egypt, the state security is the most common place using torture . All victims of torture among the studied sample were tortured before revolution and most of them reported that beating is the commonest method used. All victims of torture didn’t notify about the accident and didn’t undergo medical consultation to evaluate torture injuries Conclusions: This study provides useful insights into the tools involved in medicolegal examination and documentation of torture victims ,measuring the opinion and knowledge of people about the presence of torture in Egypt .As a result of a survey carried out in this study ,most of the people were against using torture under any circumstances. |
