المستخلص The Egyptian Village suffers from a multitude of problems that hinder its developmental role. Within the framework of urban policies announced by the Egyptian Government, the state recently started preparing general strategic plans to develop the Egyptian Village. Due to the massive scientific advances in various fields, the government relied on many modern systems and technologies for its urban developmental policy, of which Geographic Information Systems (GIS) was a major tool, to store, analyze and update urban data. Although these systems have seen widespread use in different developmental fields in most countries worldwide, as well as the rapidly accelerating advances in this field, their use in Egypt –especially in the field of urban development- is still hindered by some obstacles and problems. These problems revolve around the unused potential of these systems and their analytical power, which in turn is caused by the absence of a clear role for GIS in development. This thesis targets finding a clear concept that defines GIS’s role by studying the possibilities of urban development for the Egyptian Village using these systems, as well as specifying the necessary standards, through an analytical study of the Egyptian experience of preparing the general strategic plan of the Egyptian Village, to identify the main pros and cons of this experiment. To achieve these goals, the thesis consists of three chapters, Chapter One titled The Historical Aspects of Using Information Systems in Development, which gives an historical outline of Information Sciences and explains its main concepts, and explores the evolution of GIS; their classification; their components and the concepts surrounding them; while clarifying the differences between them and other similar systems, Chapter Two titled Using Geographic Information Systems in Urban Development, showing the traditional paradigm of urban planning and the idea of strategic planning, and its main foundations (of which GIS is the most important), their analytical functions and their role in development, by analyzing experiments in using GIS in Wide scale development and urban development of villages and the lessons learned from them. Chapter Three, Using Geographic Information Systems in the Urban Development of the Egyptian Village, analytically addresses the general strategic plan of the Egyptian Village, its goals, the methodology followed in preparing this plan and its preparatin |
