Abstract

The work presented in this thesis consists of Three parts: Part I represents a phytochemical investigation of Vicia faba L. cultivar: Rena Mora cultivated in Egypt; while Part II represents phytochemical investigation of frash leaves of Diospyros kaki Thunb. cultivar: Ormond, cultivated in Egypt, and Part III includes quantitative determination of the antioxidant activity of selected extracts and isolates using DPPH method.
PART I- PHYTOCHEMICAL INVESTIGATION OF VICIA FABA L. Cultivar: RENA MORA, CULTIVATED IN EGYPT
Vicia faba L. is a very important economic crop cultivated in Egypt and it represents an important component of the Egyptian Diet. Reviewing the current available literature, it was found that all the previous investigations have been carried out on the seed while the pericarp was not investigated before.
There are many cultivars of Vicia faba L. cultivated in Egypt. According to the available literature, it was found that cultivar: Rena Mora was not investigated before. This part includes phytochemical investigation of Vicia faba L. cultivar: Rena Mora, cultivated in Egypt.
Part I: Consists of Five Chapters:
Chapter I: Screening of Vicia faba L. cv. Rena Mora for Antioxidant Activity.
Chapter I.1: Screening of Seed and Pericarp of Vicia faba L. cultivar: Rena Mora for
Antioxidant Activity:
100 g of both pericarp and seeds of Vicia faba L. cv. Rena mora in fresh and dried form were extracted with ethyl alcohol (70%) at room temperature. The different extracts were screened for antioxidant activity using HPTLC and using DPPH as spray reagent.
The DPPH sprayed HPTLC plates showed that, the 70% alcoholic extract of the fresh pericarp has the maximum antioxidant activity, while the 70% alcoholic extracts of the dried pericarp and the fresh seed showed lower number of the yellow spots and the 70% alcoholic extract of the dried seed showed very faint yellow spots.
As a result of the TLC screening of the different extracts of Vicia faba L., the 70% alcoholic extract of the fresh pericarp was chosen for further phytochemical investigation as a promising source of antioxidant compounds.
