Abstract

Goldsmith’s “She Stoops to Conquer” is selected as a model for the 18th century highly formal and structured literary language. However, Pinter’s “The Caretaker”, on the other hand, is chosen as a representative of the 20th century literary language which is usually devalued and presented in a casual and simple way. Using both texts can shed light on the ability of software programs such as T-LAB to analyze both formal and informal literary language.
The thesis consists of three main chapters, in addition to the introduction and conclusion. Chapter one introduces the new trend of using computers in text analysis. It highlights its history, along with the ongoing debate amongst linguists for its advantages and disadvantages. Besides, the chapter gives an overview of computer-assisted discourse studies, in addition to an overview of computer-aided stylistic studies. Chapter one also highlights the achievements in today’s Natural Language Processing and computational linguistics through drawing the attention to the ongoing developments in computational syntax, semantics and discourse. In addition, the chapter gives some significant background overview of the most relevant application areas for computational linguistics, such as lexicography, machine translation, information retrieval, computer-aided language learning and speech synthesis. Moreover, chapter one gives an overview of computer corpus linguistics, along with highlighting the differences between various text analysis software available on the market. Finally, the chapter ends with a thorough introduction to the chosen text analysis software package, T-LAB, showing how it is fit for discourse analysis and therefore suitable for the study.
Chapter two is divided into two sections. On the one hand, the first part is dedicated to a human discourse analysis of “She Stoops to Conquer” by focusing on certain discourse analysis tools such as, the use of register, repetition, dialect, colloquialism, figurative language along with other tools. On the other hand, the second section attempts at a full computer-assisted discourse analysis of the same text using the T-LAB text analysis software.
Likewise, chapter three is divided into two sections. The first part is devoted to a human discourse analysis of “The Caretaker”, manipulating prominent discourse analysis tools, such as, the use of pauses, silence, register, repetition, turn-taking techniques, along with other tools. While the second section attempts at a full computer-assisted discourse analysis of the same text using T-LAB software.
In the conclusion, the discourse analysis outcomes from the computer-assisted analysis are compared to the human discourse analysis results, showing the results that they agreed on and the results that they disagreed on in an attempt to give an account of the advantages and disadvantages of using text analysis software in literary studies.
