Abstract

Health-risk behaviors are defined as any activity undertaken by people with a frequency or intensity that increase risk of disease or injury.adolescent often engage in risky behaviors such as smoking, drinking alcohol, using drugs, and early unprotected sexual activity, that might pose a threat to adolescents’ future health(Department of health for children,2008).
World Health organization (WHO, 2011) reported that More than 2.6 million young people aged 10 to 24 die each year, mostly due to preventable causes. Statistics show that half of the premature death from the 10 leading causes in developed countries is caused by preventable factors, such as: tobacco use, alcohol abuse, physical inactivity, unhealthy dietary habits, risk sexual practices, non-adherence to effective medication regimens (Webb, &Sheeran, 2006).
Many serious diseases in adulthood have their roots in adolescence for example, tobacco use, sexually transmitted infections including HIV, poor eating and exercise habits, lead to illness or premature death later in life (WHO, 2013).
The aim of the current study was examine health risk behaviors among adolescents at school age .
Setting of the study:
This study was conducted at six schools at Kafre El-zayatcity (secondary school ), GarbiaGovemate. During the period of the academic year of 2013.Subjects of the study
The subjects reached 360 students, sixty from each level (General Secondary School for girls 60, General Secondary School for boys 60,Technical Secondary School for girls 60, Technical Secondary School for boys 60 and Al- Azhar Secondary School for girls 60, Al- Azhar Secondary School for boys 60). All selected students have met the following inclusion criteria: students aged from 15-18 years, students of both sexes, full time registered school students and agree to participate in the study.
Tools of the study
Two tools were used for data collection based on extensive review of literature. These tools were:-
Tool 1: Structured interview questionnaire(Appendix I I):
It was developed by the researcher after reviewing a related literature, and expertise’s opinions which was used to assessed health risk behavior among adolescents at school age. It was written in Arabic and comprise of the following:
Part one:
Demographic data: It included characteristics of the adolescents as age, sex, study years, weight and height, residence, history for any chronic diseases, family monthly income.
Part two:
Family characteristics: It included data as: family size, number of rooms, fathers education, mothers’ education, family monthly income, and health problems of the family.
