Abstract

The internship program minimize the difficult for new graduates to transition from student to the staff nurse role in hospitals, to meet the needs of today’s hospitalized patients. New graduates must have the knowledge and skills to care for patients. Nursing education emphasizes preparation of nurses intern with abroad knowledge base so that, they may work in a variety of patient care settings, specially preparation in the area as critical care units is not fully emphasized at the baccalaureate level ( Colleen&Carolyn,2004).
The present study focused on the impact of internship training year on nurse intern clinical skill acquisition in intensive care units at Main Mansoura University hospital.
This study conducted in intensive care units at Main Mansoura University hospital namely anesthesia, thoracic and surgical intensive care unit.
Study subjects included 130 nurse intern, after they completed the four years undergraduate years at the faculty of nursing, Mansoura University.
The collection of data was achieved by using Orientation Professional Profile Check List modified by researcher based on Orientation Professional Profile questionnaire Carrfey and Curren, (1980) to determine the clinical skills of nurse interns using pre-and post test.
The results of this study shown the following findings:
• There was a highly statistical significant improvements in skills acquisition related to technical skills after two months internship training experience period comparing to before two months internship training experience period (P<0.05).
• Assisting in daily hygienic procedures was the highest technical skills acquisition. While, prevention of nosocomial infection was the lowest after two months internship training experience.
• There was a highly statistical significant improvements in skills acquisition related to managerial skills after two months internship training experience period comparing to before two months internship training experience period (P<0.05).
• Implementation of care plan was the highest managerial skills acquisition. While, data collection and analysis was the lowest after two months internship training experience.
• There was significant relation between skill acquisition (technical, managerial) of nurse intern and their age and marital status.
