Objective: The aim of this study was compare between cone beam computed (CBCT) and digital intra oral radiography in the detection of root canal systems and number of roots of the extracted teeth. In addition to analysis of CBCT scans taken from a radiographic center from patients requesting other dental services in order to see the prevelance of Root canal systems(RCSs) in extracted teeth and patients.
Materials and methods: In this study one hundred human extracted teeth with fully formed apices were included in our survey, in addition to analysis of CBCT scanstaken for patients requesting other dental services, The collected samples were selected as follow: Twenty five mandibular incisors.Twenty five mandibular premolars. Twenty five maxillary first molars. Twenty five maxillary second molars, CBCT scans were evaluated and compared to each others. The type of RCSs per tooth identified with the CBCT was compared with that identified with the digital periapical images.
Results: CBCT scans identified 4types of RCSs per mandibular incisors , while PSP identified only 1 RCS which is type I and both modalities showed that all teeth had only one root. Evaluation of mandibular premolars using CBCT identified 5 types of RCSs while PSP identified only 3 types of RCSs also CBCT identified 22 extracted teeth having one root, 2 teeth having 2 roots and 1 tooth having 3 roots, while PSP showed that 22 teeth had only one root and 3 teeth had 2 roots . Evaluation of maxillary first molars using CBCT identified 4types of RCSs in the MB root of maxillary first molars while PSP identified only 3 RCSs while examination of the DB and palatal roots using CBCT and PSP identified one type of RCS (type I) . Also both modalities identified the same number of roots in each molar. Evaluation of maxillary second molars using CBCT identified 4 types of RCSs in the MB root, while PSP identified 3 types of RCSs, and examination of the DB root using CBCT identified 2 types of RCSs, while PSP showed only type I RCS. Both modalities showed the same type of RCS (typeI) in the palatal root and also the same number of roots.
Conclusions: It was found That evaluation of CBCT images always resulted in a greater number of RCSs identified than evaluations of PSP images in-vitro.
