Abstract

Mycorrhiza frequently leads to the control of viruses, but appears to have the opposite effect on leaf pathogens. In this study, we studied mycorrhizal effects on the development of mosaic symptoms in tomato L. esculentum var. castle rock caused by Tomato mosaic tobamovirus. ToMV induced severe mosaic and leaf deformation of all leaves was studied in non-mycorrhizal plants. Mycorrhizal tomato plants had significantly less ToMV symptoms than non-mycorrhizal plants and also plant growth and nutrients uptake were enhanced by mycorrhizas. The protective effect of mycorrhizas towards development of ToMV has become parallels to induce systemic resistance, mediated by microbial-rhizosphere: both biocontrol agents are root-associated organisms and both are effective against necrotrophic pathogens. The possible mechanisms involved are discussed
