Abstract

Background: The purpose of present study was to evaluate IL-21 levels in the
gingival crevicular fluid of patients with chronic periodontitis before and after nonsurgical
periodontal therapy in an attempt to assess its role as a diagnostic and
prognostic biomarker of periodontal destruction.
Subjects and methods: The present study was conducted on 25 individuals Ten of the
individuals were healthy and representing the control group, group (A) and 15 were
suffering from chronic periodontitis representing group (B). Gingival crevicular fluid
samples were collected from both study groups to detect IL-21 levels. Regarding the
assessment of IL-21, ELISA technique was used. Group (B) was subjected to scaling
and root planing and then were recalled after 4 months from treatment to resample the
gingival crevicular fluid and evaluate the changes in clinical parameters after the
nonsurgical periodontal treatment. Then all the detected data was subjected to
statistical analysis.
Results: the current study showed that, there was a statistically significant positive
correlation between IL-21 level and all clinical parameters at baseline and after 4
months from non-surgical periodontal treatment.
Conclusion: IL-21 may be considered as one of the important diagnostic and
prognostic markers of periodontal destruction.
