Abstract

THE AIM OF THE STUDY: The aim of the present is to evaluate the effect of cementing fiber posts with MTA on the adhesive bond strength and diametral tensile strength of reinforced teeth.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The present study evaluated the effect of cementing fiber posts (RelyX fiber post) with MTA (Angelus) and resin cement (RelyX Unicem) on the adhesive bond strength and diametral tensile strength of reinforced teeth. A total of 40 recently extracted, single rooted, caries free human teeth were collected. Root canal preparation and obturation were performed. The root canals of the samples were enlarged using a low speed drill provided by the manufacturer of the selected post system. The posts were assigned to two equal groups (n=20 each) according to the experimental group. Group (1) (n=20): Diametral tensile strength. Group (2) (n=20): Adhesive bond strength. Each group was further divided into 2 subgroups (n=10 each) according to the type of the cement used. Subgroup (A) (n=10): Self adhesive cement: RelyX Unicem. Subgroup (B) (n=10): Mineral trioxide aggregate: MTA Angelus. After cementation all specimens were stored in normal saline. Testing of samples included: Fracture resistance to measure diametral tensile strength. Pull-out test to measure adhesive bond strength. Diametral tensile strength: Group (1)The diametral tensile strength was tested on the universal testing machine by subjecting the cervical part of the roots to a stress on the universal testing machine. The load obtained was calculated and data were statistically analyzed. Adhesive bond strength: Group (2) the teeth were decapitated 1 mm above the cemento-enamel junction from the proximal side, perpendicular to their long axis using diamond disc under copious water irrigation. The adhesive bond strength was tested by subjecting the fiber posts to coronal
pulling force on the universal testing machine. The load obtained was calculated and data were statistically analyzed.
RESULTS: No significant difference in fracture resistance of endodontically treated teeth between RelyX resin cement and MTA cement. RelyX resin cement significantly increased post retention compared with MTA cement.
