Abstract

Varicocele is an abnormal dilation of the pampiniform plexus that constitute the primary drainage of the testis. It is found approximately in 15% of male adolescent with a left sided predominance. Majority of which is due to retrograde flow of blood in the internal spermatic vein and differences in the configuration of the right and left internal spermatic veins and their embryologic origins.
Inguinal approach surgical procedure for the repair of varicocele with reported benefits of better convalescence, minimal invasiveness and less analgesic requirement postoperatively.
The study was conducted on 40 patients with varicocele who were subjected to inguinal approach for treatment of varicocele with (group I- 20 patients) and retroperitoneal approach (group II- 20 patients), to study feasibility, safety and surgical effectiveness of inguinal varicocelectomy and to compare it with retroperitoneal varicocelectomy.
Inguinal approach varicocelectomy was more superior to conventional retroperitoneal approach in treatment of varicocele. With inguinal approach varicocelectomy, identification and preservation of the testicular artery and vas deference can be easily done, also recurrence rate is lower.
However, the sample size was not large enough to demonstrate the possible difference between two procedures.
