Abstract

The present study was designed to investigate the effect of some medicinal plant extracts in vitro and in vivo on haemonchosis in sheep. Five hundred abomasa were collected and examined from randomly slaughtered sheep, at Monieb abattoir in Giza Governorate and the result revealed that the percentage of H. contortus infestation was (26 %). Pre clinical experiments were achieved through determination of the in vitro anthelmentic efficacy of CEEs of A. herba alba, B. aegyptiaca and A. sativum at three different concentrations 25, 30 and 50 mg/ml compared to albendazole at 10 ug/ml on adult H. contortus through worms motility inhibition assay, scanning electron microscope of adult worms treated with CEEs of A. herba alba, B. aegyptiaca and A. sativum at 50 mg/ml and albendazole at 10 μg/ml for 24 Hrs and the in vitro inhibitory effect of A. herba alba, B. aegyptiaca and A. sativum CEEs on hatching and moulting of H. contortus eggs in H. contortus cultures. The three tested extracts caused a significant level of death of H. contortus; however, CEE of B. aegyptiaca exhibited greater and quicker anthelmintic activity than CEE of A. herba alba and A. sativum at the same concentrations. %WMI at concentration 50mg/ml was of 81.8, 90.9 and 72.7 and the mortality index was 0.83, 0.91 and 0.75 respectively. The obvious extremely adverse effect was observed on the cuticle and mouth part of worms exposed to CEE of B. aegyptiaca, A. herba alba and A. sativum respectively compared to albendazole. The strongest inhibitory effect on hatching, moulting and survival of developmental forms of H. contortus was observed on the cultures treated with B. aegyptiaca CEE followed by A. herba alba CEE compared to A. sativum CEE and the control cultures. In vivo anthelmintic activity of A. herba alba and B. aegyptiaca CEEs compared to albendazol in treatment of sheep experimentally infested with H. contortus was done. Fifteen balady lambs were used and divided into 5 groups each of 3 lambs and the results revealed that a significant reduction in the mean FECs for both B. aegyptiaca CEE treated and albendazol treated followd by A. herba alba CEE treated groups in comparison with the infested non treated group (control positive) and non infested non treated (control negative) group. CEE of B. aegyptiaca caused a great effect on the FECR as it reached 100% at day 27th of the experiment (7th PT). Sheep experimentally infested with H. contortus were suffered from high FEC, lower level of RBCs, Hb, PCV%, a increase of WBCs and eosinophil counts, a release of the level of serum globulin, GoT, GPT, urea and creatinine levels and a decrease of serum total protein, albumin and A/G ratio, more than the healthy animals. The most efficient treatments that improved and induced a return to these parameters, to almost normal levels were B. aegyptiaca CEE, albendazole and A. herba alba CEE, respectively.
