المستخلص

The study of social and cultural life in the region of Cyrenaica during
the period (631-96 BC.) is one of the important studies in the history of
Cyrenaica region located in the North-eastern region of Libya during the
Greek and Ptolemaic eras. This is because it is relevant and complementary
to the previous studies that dealt with political, economic, religious and
intellectual life in the region. This study shows marital status and cultural
renaissance of its population since its downfall under the control of Greek
in 631 BC. till the end of the Ptolemaic control in (96 BC. AD), as its
possession shifted to the Romans due to the counsel of Ptolemy Apion.
The researcher was prompted by the desire and study in ancient
history to choose this subject because this period needs to be studied,
especially as it has not been studied carefully and specifically before by
researchers. This is in order to show the historical facts about the social and cultural life in the region of Cyrenaica which is one of the periods
distinguishing the ancient history of Libya because most of the researchers
who wrote about the history of the Cyrenaica did not focus their research
on the life of the local population, and their role in the social and cultural life in the Territory during the period specified in this study.
The study aims to identify the Libyan tribes that lived in the region
before the arrival of the Greek settlers. It tried to highlight the reasons that prompted the Greeks to dominate the region, identify the relationships between Libyan tribes and the Greeks, show the most important social
classes of the population during the Greek and Ptolemaic eras, identify the
houses of the population, the used household items, as well as the
population’s habits and acquisitions, the extent of the mutual influences
between Libyan tribes and the Greeks, highlight the most important schools
of education in the region and their scientific and cultural roles, know the
most important philosophers and philosophical ideologies, poets and their poems, geographers and their geographical researches, historians and their historical writings, show the most important arts practiced by the
inhabitants of the region under the Greek and the extent of how the Greek
artists influenced by the surrounding environment. This study consisted of an introductory chapter that dealt with the
following: The introductory chapter deals with geographic region of
Cyrenaica including: (1) the site and its importance; (2) the topography as
for the plains, mountains, hills and desert; (3) climate in terms of
temperature, wind and rain and (4) the natural resources in terms of water,
soil, trees and animals.
Part I: Social Life, consists of three chapters: Chapter (1): the
population, and included the elements of the population in terms of the
Libyan tribes, Greeks, Jews, social classes including the ruling class, the
aristocracy, and the public, and the class of Libyans.
Chapter (2) dealt with the family, their customs, holdings, and included the following. First: the family and its traditions, as well as the Libyan family, the Greek family, and the Jewish family. Second, fashion, clothing and shoes. Third: cosmetics.
While Chapter (3) addressed housing and its contents including: first,
housing, and second: furniture and furnishings, and third: household items.
Part II: Cultural Life. It consists of three chapters. The first addressed
education and science. Education included education in the times of ancient Libyans, the Greeks, as well as the scientific and literary schools. The
Second dealt with science, including medicine, astronomy, geography,
mathematics, architectural engineering, kinetic knowledge, and industrial
installations.
