Abstract Pesticides is a general classification t~at includes insecticides, rodenticides, fungicides, herbicides and fumigants. These compounds, are manufactured for the purpose of destroying some form of life. While selective toxicity of pesticides is extremely desirable, all can produce at least some toxicity in man (Klaassen, 1985). Occupational exposures to tiese chemicals, bot~ in production and use resulted in chronic or persistent neurological manifestations from certain compounds. Acute poisoning by pesticides do occur. They are usually the result of occupational exposures or carless use, misuse, or mishandling the pesticide (Murp~y, 1986). Most insecticidal products fall within four main classes, the organochlorines, the organophosphates, the carbamates and the pyrethroids. Organophosphates and carbamates gained favour, because they have high insecticidal activity. with low persistence when compared with organochlorines (Eutson and Roberts, 1985). |
