Abstract cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) and cantaloupe (Cucurbita melo var cantaloupensis, Naud) are two of the important vegetable crops grown under plastic houses in Egypt . Exporting crop to foreign countries during winter season can be of great economical benefit for growers and moreover, an additional source of hard currency for the national economy . therefor, It is advisable to pay a special attention in order to increase the quantity and improve the quality of these crops. It is known that cucumber and cantloupe are summmer season crops, and any treatment which modifies greenhouse microclimate and soil environmental to avoid hazardous effects of low temperature in winter season is useful. Also, most of greenhouses in Egypt are constructed in the new land area where under ground water is the main source for i r rig at ion, providing that this under ground water is a limited source of irrigation, this make it a must to rationalize the water use Abou-Eadid and El-Beltagy (1987) Found that class A Pan method is more sui table to identify water requirement of plastic houses under Egyptian condition rather than radiaition method . Based on this conclusion, more efforts should be done to determine the optimum water requirement in order to increase water use efficiency Therefor, this work was based on the determination of evapotranspiration using both of the two methods . The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of plastic mulch and irri.gation water level on growth, yield and water consumptive use of cucumber in autamn season. Also, the effect of plastic mulch on growth and yield of cantaloupe in spring season . |
