Abstract

The present study was conducted at the poultry farm, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Zagazig University, to study the effect of selection for growth traits in Japanese quails from the period from April 2013 to March 2014. Three hundred birds 2 weeks of age were collected from the experimental unit, Faculty of Agriculture, Zagazig University. from the base population (original), birds were selected based on the individual body weight at 4 weeks of age into high body weight (HBW4), low body weight (HBW4) and random bred control (RBC) and then the birds were wing banded. The high line group possesses all birds which had body weight heavier than the population mean, while the low line birds had body weight lighter than the population mean.
The main objectives of this study were:
1. To investigate the effect of selection for growth traits in Japanese quails on some productive traits; a) Body weight at 2nd, 4th and 6th week of age) in the three lines across the three generations of selection. b) Carcass traits (slaughter dressing, carcass, giblets weights and their percentages of live weight) at the third generations of selection in control, low and high lines.
2. To estimate the correlation and heritability of the body weight at different ages with carcass traits.
3. To detect single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in growth hormone (GH) and Insulin like growth factor-1 (IGF1) genes in the two selected lines of Japanese quails.
