Abstract

The main experiments were carried out through years of 2011 and 2012 in the biogas laboratory at the Department of Agricultural Engineering, Faculty of agriculture, Zagazig University. The objectives of the present investigation are to: -Manufacture of an anaerobic digesters for producing biogas from animal wastes.- Optimize some different parameters affecting the performance of the anaerobic digester.- Determine energy required for operating the manufactured digester (Heating and mixing) as well as the net gained energy.Four biogas digesters were constructed at El- Tahra work shop, Sharkia Governorate. Each digester consists of digestion chamber, inlet tube, outlet tube, mixing system and heating unit. Each digester was designed to provide volume of 40 l with digestion volume of 30 l. Every digester was surrounded by a water jacket of the heating system and equipped with mechanical stirrer. The constructed digester was experimented under three different fermentation mixtures, four different fermentation temperatures and four stirring periods. Digesters performance was evaluated taking into consideration gas production, methane percentage, nitrogen percentage, required energy, gained energy and net gained energy. The obtained data reveal the following important points : Recycling farm wastes by converting them into valuable products is of great important to avoid negative effects of pollution on both human health and environment . Utilizing the manufactured anaerobic digesters is necessary for producing biogas from farm wastes to be used as a renewable energy in the rural areas. The experimental results of the anaerobic digester performance reveal that biogas production as well as total nitrogen (organic fertilizer) were maximum under the following conditions: br>- Utilizing fermentation mixture of 50% cattle dung + 50% Chicken manure. Adjusting fermentation temperature at 38 0C (mesophilic temperature).Adjusting stirring period 20 min. /4 h.
