Abstract

This work was carried out at the Fac. Agric., Zagazig Univ., Egypt, to study heterosis, combining ability and maternal effect, if it was presented in some aubergine traits, using line × tester mating design (5×3) and its reciprocal. Eight parents were used for this study; i.e., SB-1 (P1), SB-2 (P2), S.AVS-5-12 (P3), S.CS-25-21 (P4), SB-4-1-22 (P5), SB-6-5-10 (P6), S.AVS-5-18 (P7), and Ch-7-11 (P8). Results showed that the best heterotic combination over mid parent (MP) and better parent (BP) were P1×P8 (33.20, 21.21%) for plant height, P6×P3 (25.49, 13.64%) for branch number per plant, P4×P7 (-24.33, -14.94%) for node number of first flower, P3×P6 (18.74%) and P3×P7 (7.33%) for flower number per cluster, P6×P1 (133.78, 43.63%) for early fruit number, P1×P7 (17.51, 8.35%) for fruit weight in early yield, P6×P1 (143.14%) and P4×P7 (108.78%) for early yield per plant, P1×P7 (38.37, 27.17%) for total fruit number, P6×P5 (28.78, 13.16%) for fruit weight, P4×P7 (69.01%) and P1×P7 (51.70%) for total yield per plant, P4×P8 (25.73%) and P7×P5 (6.81%) for fruit length, and P7×P4 (25.67%) and P2×P8 (11.00%) for fruit width, respectively. The best combiner parents and the best crosses were SB-2 and P1×P8 for plant height; SB-2 and P5×P6 for branch number per plant; SB-2 and P2×P6 for node number of first flower; S.AVS-5-12 and P3×P8 for flower number per cluster; SB-2 and P4×P7 for early fruit number; S.CS-25-21 and P6×P3 for fruit weight in early yield; SB-4-1-22 and P4×P7 for early yield per plant; SB-1 and P4×P7 for total fruit number; S.CS-25-21 and P4×P7 for fruit weight; SB-2 and P4×P7 for total yield per plant; SB-4-1-22 and P4×P8 for fruit length; and S.CS-25-21 and P7×P4 for fruit width, respectively. The effect of female parent on total yield per plant was found in the cross of P4 with P7; for fruit length was P1 when crossed with P6 and P8, P4 with P8, P5 with P6, and P7 with P5; for fruit width was P2 as female when crossed with P8, and P7 with P3 and P4. These lines reflected effect of maternal parent on these traits and, also, affected heterosis on the base of MP and BP.
