Abstract

This research was conducted to study the effect of planting date on growth, and flower heads yield and its quality of two globe artichoke cultivars (Balady) and (Herious) French. The field experiment was done during two successive seasons of 2008/2009 and 2009/2010 at private Farm, at Kafr El-Dawar, Beheira Governorate, Egypt. Planting artichoke on 1st September gave the higher values of plant growth parameters, yield and its components as well as edible part (receptacle) quality compared to the other tested planting dates . In addition, artichoke Herious French cultivar showed vigourus plant growth, high yield and produced flower heads with good quality compered to Balady cultivar. The best interaction treatments for increasing average flower head weight and total flower feddan/plant were planting globe artichoke in 1st September with Balady or Herious French cultivar. Fertilizing artichoke plants with N at a rate of (120 kg N/fed.) and potassium at a rate of (75kg K2O/fed.) significantly increased plant growth, average flower head and weight and total yield/feddan. The interaction between 120 kg N ×75 kg K2O/faddan recorded the highest number of flower heads/plant, average head weight and total yield per feddan with no significant difference when compared with N × K2O at rates of 120 × 150, 160 × 75 and 160 × 150 kg/feddan.
