Abstract

Two experiments were designed to determine the lysine requirements of Japanese quail chickens during the winter (January to March) and summer (June to August) seasons in Egypt. In each experiment, a total number of 300 unsexed one week old Japanese quail chicks were randomly distributed into five treatment groups of 60 chicks each with three replicates (each of 20 chicks). A lysine deficient basal diet was prepared, based on analyzed amino acid content of the main raw material to contain 1.04% total lysine (80% of the requirement recommended by NRC (1994). The basal diet was supplemented with 0, 0.13, 0.26, 0.39 and 0. 52 L- lysine HCL to obtain total lysine levels of 1.04, 1.17, 1.30, 1.43 and 1.56%, which were represented 80, 90, 100, 110 and 120% of the requirements recommended by NRC (1994). Birds in all groups were reared during the experimental period in suitable experimental pens. All birds in experimental groups were kept under the same managerial, hygienic and environmental conditions. Birds were exposed to 24 hours light per day during the experimental period. Birds were fed. ad-libitum and fresh water was available in all time. Growth performance (live body weight, body weight gain, feed intake and feed conversion), carcass traits and economic efficiency were studied during the growing period (1-6 weeks of age). Results obtained seemed to justly the following conclusion: It could be concluded that, a dietary levels of 1.43%and 1.56% lysine (110%and 120% of the NRC, 1994 recommended level) are recommended for growing Japanese quails from 1-6 weeks of age, during winter and summer seasons in Egypt.
