Abstract The practical experiments have been carried out at Agricultural Eng. Dep., Faculty of Agriculture, Zagazig University, Sharkia Governorate during the summer season of 2012-2013. This study aimed to evaluate the performance of a watermelon seeds extracting machine under different operating parameters and choose the proper conditions for operating the machine with few losses and costs. It also aimed to study the physical properties of watermelon fruits and seeds in order to use it in manufacturing the separating cones and concave holes dimensions. The machine performance was evaluated based on seed losses, broken seeds, machine extraction efficiency, machine productivity, machine criterion cost and specific energy requirements Extracting operation was conducted using the extracting machine at three feeding rates (20, 30 and 40 kg/min), four flesh separating cones speeds (0.47, 0.63, 0.79 and 0.94 m/s ), three flesh separating cones dimensions ratio (0.38, 0.30 and 0.25) and four extracting times after harvesting (0, 3, 5 and 7 days). from the obtained results it was revealed that, the maximum productivity of 106.37 kg/h, the minimum specific energy of 8.84 kW.h/Mg and the minimum criterion cost of 195.75 L.E./Mg, were obtained under the operating conditions of 30 kg/min feeding rate, 0.79 m/s flesh separating cones speed, 0.30 flesh separating cones dimensions ratio and extracting watermelon seeds at the 5th day after harvesting. |
