Abstract
Preoperative anemia in a surgical patient predisposes to poor outcomes. As an alternative to transfusions, many blood conservative strategies had emerged in order to reduce allogenic blood transfusion which is associated with increased morbidity and mortality The challenge for surgeons, anesthesiologists, and transfusionmedicine specialists will be to combine the use of products of biotechnology like rHuEPO with other conservation strategies, so that the costs of bloodconservation techniques approximate the costs of allogeneic-transfusion therapy Our study aimed at assessing the effect of adding iron alone or erythropoietin and iron to ANH on blood transfusion requirements in elective abdominal hysterectomy.
