Abstract It is well known that genetic sex which is establishe:: at the mo:nent of fertilizatior::, deteraines gonadal sex and ’iat gonadal sex, in turn , determines the establish:::lent of phenotypic sex, in which the mature male o~ female phenotype is developed. Any disturbance during embryogenesis of one of the stepes in this development may be reflected clinically as a disorder of sexual di ffe~entiation. There are a variety of known mechanisms by which abno~alities in huoan development can arise: an environmental insult, as in the ingestion of a virilizing dr:J.gs during p~egnancy, non fa>1liliel abe:::-rations of ’he sex chro::~oso:nes, as in 45 :x 0 gonadal dysgenesis, developmental birth defects of multifactorial origin, as in most cases of hypospadies, or hereditary disorders resulting fro:n signle-gene mutations, as in the testicular feminization s.yndrome. |
