Abstract

Four novel insecticides with mode of action different than that known with the
conventional insecticides were evaluated for their potency against bollworm larvae
Earias insulana (Boisd.) and Pectinophora gossypiella (Saund.). Three conventional
insecticides recommended for bollworm control were used for comparison. Under
laboratory conditions emamectin- benzoate was the most potent compound followed
by indoxacarb, while the OP compound was the least toxic one. Joint action between
the novel and conventional insecticides were tested under laboratory conditions at
LC 25 levels .Results indicated that the most potentiation effect was recorded with the
mixture (imidacloprid+alpha-cypermethrim). An experiment was conducted at 2012
and 2013 seasons at sakha agricalture research station using cotton Var GIZA 86.
Three sprays were applied from each insecticide at interval of 15 days. The obtained
results indicated that the four used novel compounds, were significantly more
effective against bollworm larvae than the three used conventional ones. The least
significant effect was observed with the carbamate compound methomyl. Results
reflected that the novel compounds were long acting on bollworm larvae than the
conventional compounds. Data indicated that potentiation of the effect was recorded
when mixtures of imidacloprid with the three conventional insecticides were applied
under field conditions which was more significant with alpha-cypermethrin. The
results concluded that, the four tested insecticides can used effectively in controlling
bollworms and a mixure of imidacloprid with alpha-cypermethrin can be used
effectively for controlling bollworms in cotton. To study the antioxidant properties of
imidacloprid compared with salicylic, they were applied at early and late season (in a
field study). Some enzymes and nonenzymatic component in cotton extracts were
analyzed.Data showed that a significant reduction was recorded with glutathione
reductases, transferases, catalases and peroxidases with imidacloprid treatment
,While salicylic acid exhibited slight increase in activity. The activity of polyphenol
oxidase was increased with slight ratioes in all treatments. Total protein content was
increased after all treatments. While imidacloprid decreased H202 content salicylic
increased it. Finally the major phenolic syringic acid was completely absent with both
compounds at early treatment while it was reduced by intermediate ratio with late
season. The other major phenolic compounds increased following early seasons, but
decreased after late one.
