Abstract

The animal feed base in Egypt suffers insufficiency of
feed in general and specifically ingredients included in
concentrate feed mixtures. Cotton seed meal seems to be the
back bone of concentrate feed industry, where it is considered
the main source of protein in concentrate mixtures.
Concequently, cotton seed meal is considered the main limiting
factor for concentrate production in the country. The
annual concentrate feed mixtures production ranged between
1.2 to 1.5 million ton during the last 5 years. This amount
of concentrate is distributed by the government for cattle
under insurance policy and buffalo. At the same time, there
are about 2,5 million heads of sheep that are mainly fed on
berseem during winter time. summer feeding depends mainly on
poor quality field-crop-residues which are not enough to cover the requirements of animals neither in protein nor in
energy. reflects a real loss in their production performance.
In previous work, which was carried out in the same
department (El-Ashry-et al. 1987}, it has been that dry.
poultry wastes (DPW) are very good nitrogen source in ruminant
rations and that DPW can successfully be used in maintenance
ration for mature sheep. In the study, the
objectives were to investigate the possibility of including graded levels of DPW in rations for newly weaned male lambs.
The effect of such nutritional treatments on growth performance,
efficiency and reproductive performance after
sexual maturity were also studied.
