Abstract The present study is a part of a UNSCO-CSI project entitled “Status of Main Marine Pollution and Socioeconomic Problems Related to the Success of Underwater Archaeological Museum Project in the Eastern Harbour of Alexandria”. This project aimed to assess the status of pollution in the Eastern Harbour (E.H.) of Alexandria within the framework of UNESCO Participation Program (2000-2001). For more than 25 years, the E.H. had been subjected to the discharge of huge amounts of untreated sewage. Although the direct sewage dumping into the harbour have been stopped since 1993, the remobilization of the resulted massive accumulated of organic matter (OM) on its bed represents an obstacle impeding the success of the foreseen underwater museum for the existed submerged archaeological remains of the old Alexandria. |
